Please help a Senior this Christmas

Christmas is usually all about kids, food and toys. But people might forget about those who don’t have anyone to celebrate with. That’s why a local program is trying to help.

The next time you pick up groceries, you can also spread some holiday cheer. “A lot of seniors need help, especially since they aren’t getting a raise in social security this year,” said Sue Moran, practice manager of Optical Solutions in Austintown, OH.

Be a Santa to a Senior is an annual holiday gift program that helps make sure everyone gets a visit from Saint Nick. It’s not really about the gift itself, it’s about the act of giving that brings joy to their eyes.

The average gift is usually about twenty bucks, and includes things like, blankets, slippers, chocolate and large print books.

Last year this program helped more than 250 seniors get a Christmas gift. “There’s people out there who don’t have families or loved ones nearby and its a chance for them to get something special for Christmas too,” said Sue.

The giving tree is inside the Optical Solutions location – 6006 Mahoning Ave., Austintown, OH 44515.  Sue said last year the program was such a success, “They had to end up bringing more cards because our customers kept bringing in more gifts,” said Moran.

If you want to help this year, please stop in soon to pick a name off the tree. It’s fun and it makes you feel  good to know that you are helping someone have a great Christmas.

If you’re interested in being a Santa to a Senior, you can pick up a name at Optical Solutions on Mahoning Avenue in the plaza across the street from Walmart in Austintown, Ohio. All the gifts can also be returned to that location.

Our first piece of advice when we bought our Airstream was from friends and fellow campers. They said to make sure you "keep the shiny side up." Something that struck me kind of funny, but so true :)
